Canyons of Light
Zazen's second Miramar album.
Samurai Ballad by Zazen
An epic opening number, Zazen's Samurai Ballad exemplifies the group's extensive work scoring film and television. Made up of Joaquin Liévano on guitar, Steve Kaplan on keyboards and Andy West on bass, Zazen derived their name from a Japanese term meaning "to sit and listen with complete awareness." It is through this shared philosophy that they are able to approach their music with such honesty and passion. Zazen has also released Enlightenment and Canyons of Light on the Miramar label.

A Touch of Magic by Coen Bais
Regarded as one of Germany's preeminent jazz pianists, Coen Bais combines the best of new age and traditional jazz to create a sound uniquely his own. He coined the term "Blue Age" to describe his music, explaining that it is "the melancholic, magic and sensual atmosphere that most people feel when listening to my music."

The song featured on this album, A Touch of Magic, was previously unreleased in North America, appearing only on the album entitled Blue Age, released in Europe by Sony Music Entertainment Holland. Bais explains, "A Touch of Magic is in fact a simple love song. Struck by 'her' touch, I went to my studio, started the recorder and played, composed and arranged this piece in just one take."

While Bais is one of the newer artists on the Miramar roster, he is not new to the music industry. In addition to his solo career, which he has focused on since 1988, Bais has been a studio co-owner, record producer, music publisher and A & R manager for WEA (Europe). Bais' debut Miramar release, Socu, was released in 1995. He is also featured on Miramar Collection: Two.

Oriental Haze by Tangerine Dream
Originally released on the limited edition Rockoon CD-5, Oriental Haze was later performed live for the 220 Volt Live release. In 1987, Tangerine Dream composed the score for the video album Canyon Dreams, for which they received their first of seven Grammy nominations. Other nominations include Best New Age Album, Best Long-Form Music Video and Best Rock Instrumental for their rendition of Jemi Hendrix's Purple Haze. Audio releases include: Canyon Dreams, Rockoon, 220 Volt Live, Turn of the Tides, Tyranny of Beauty and The Dream Mixes, as well as selections on Miramar Collection: One and Miramar Collection: Two. Video releases include Canyon Dreams and Three Phase - Past, Present & Future.
Angel by Paul Speer
As one of the founders of Miramar, Paul Speer produced teh first two video album soundtracks for Miramar; Natural States and Desert Vision. These timeless soundtracks set the tone for Miramar's leadership in producing "cutting edge" video albums. He has contributed to a number of other Miramar projects, including the soundtrack to the feature film Third Stone from the Sun, and his solo album, Collection 991: Music + Art. It seems fitting that Speer picked Angel, a song originally done by fellow Seattleite Jimi Hendrix.

Big Blue by James Reynolds
Perhaps best known for his score to the Multi-Platinum selling video album The Mind's Eye, James Reynolds has been involved with several high profile projects including records, videos, soundtracks commercials, laser shows, theater, multimedia presentations and computer games. His ability to score dramatic music to images in a seamless fashion and production prowess have contributed to his reputation as a "technical wizard." When asked what instrument is his favorite he responds, "The studio." In addition to his solo efforts, Reynolds has been featurd on projects by David Lanz, Paul Speer, Tingstad & Rumbel as well as productions for companies such as IBM, Nintendo, Boeing, Weyerhaeuser and others.

Big Blue was composed, produced and performed by Reynolds. In addition, all instruments, except the tenor saxophone in the middle bridge, were performed by Reynolds, utilizing synthesizers, computers and other gadgets.

Having been involved with Miramar from the ground floor, Reynolds has appeared on several projects including: The Mind's Eye (Video, CD & Cass), Power Moves (Video, CD & Cass), Third Stone from the Sun (Video), True North (Video, CD & Cass), Miramar Collection: One and Miramar Collection: Two (CD & Cass)

Ecologie
Joaquin
Liévano's debut solo album on Miramar

Castilian Love Song by Joaquin Liévano
This song clearly shows the sheer virtuosity and writing talent of this extremely gifted guitarist. Liévano has played with Jean Luc Ponty, Yanni, and most recently the band Zazen. Liévano's wide range of styles is clearly contrasted by his power chops on Samurai Ballad and the melodic tonality of this melody. His solo album, Ecologie, on Miramar has received wide spread acclaim and recognition worldwide.

Water Colors
Pete Bardens' debut album on Miramar.
Hoka Hey (The Buffalo Hunt) by Pete Bardens
Pete Bardens has worked with a wide variety of world renowned musicians including Van Morrison, Mick Fleetwood and Peter Green. He may be best known as a founding member of the highly innovative progressive band, Camel. His keyboard sound and writing were an integral part of the first eight Camel albums including the highly successful Snow Goose based on the children's book by Paul Gallico. He has numerous solo albums including his Miramar releases: Water Colors (Video, CD & Cass) and Further Than You Know (CD and Cass). Hoka Key is an excerpt from a forthcoming concept album about Native American Indians.

Theme from "A Modern Affair" by Jan Hammer
Jan Hammer's first involvement with Miramar arose when he was given the challenge of scoring to the ever-changing computer generated images of Beyond the Mind's Eye. Hammer was chosen because of his prolific scoring experience which includes his GRAMMY Award winning "Miami Vice" work and dozens of other film and television scores. His most current work is the theme song from the film "A Modern Affair," starring Stanley Tucci. His other Miramar recording, Drive, features guest performances by Jeff Beck and Michael Brecker.

Tristan and the Book by Richard Burmer
Richard Burmer, an avid musicologist, has transformed ancient 13th and 14th Century songs in a way that only he is capable of doing. His sound, often likened to Vangelis, is deep, rich and frequently melancholy. These recordings were produced expressly for Miramar Ten, and they perfectly compliment his debut Miramar release, Treasures of the Saints.

"Part one is my interpretation of a 14th Century Italian piece by an anonymous composer titled, "Lamento Di Tristan." This work, as most during this period, is a base melody which allows many versions of accompaniments to be placed along with it. I am very fond of the music of this time and was moved by its lovely mood that I felt very compelled to do my own impression of it, using electronic and acoustic instruments I use for my own compositions. I did not want to try to recreate it as a version of authenticity, but rather embellish upon it and still project its exotic touch, which I find unique. Part Two is another Italian piece from the 13th Century by an anonymous composer titled, "Lauda Novella." This composition, just as "Lamento Di Tristan," became another work I feel strongly towards (as in much of this period of music) that its somewhat cascading and cycling form of melody lends itself to an almost irresistible opportunity to build into a crescendo by adding instruments in dialogue to give it a rhythmic form that leads to its climax. I chose to join these two compositions together to form not only my love towards them, but also look upon them as creating an instrumental storyline which I title, "Tristan and the Book." — Richard Burmer

The Star Road by Jonn Serrie
The first recording artist signed to Miramar, Jonn Serrie's debut album, And the Stars Go With You, is a tribute to Christa MacAuliffe who was part of the Teacher in Space program through NASA. She tragically lost her life in the Challenger disaster, but Serrie's music, a tribute to her accomplishments, will live on forever. The Star Road is a continuation of the style he revolutionized with And the Stars Go With You.
Serrie explains, "The Star Road epitomizes my ongoing quest to musically interpret the rarefied depths of space."

Serrie's list of achievements and contributions are both diverse and esteemed. One project combined his music with the experience of Lucasfilm, Ltd. and the Hayden Planetarium in New York. The result was an interactive children's project featuring the robot duo C-3PO and R2-D2 from the movie "Star Wars." Serrie continues to perform and compose for numerous events and projects around the world. He has worked with EXPO '92 in Sevilla, Spain, The U.S. Navy, CNN, The Discovery Channel, and has contributed to 15 Miramar audio and video projects, including the Platinum selling video album Desert Vision. Other Miramar recordings include: Flightpath, Tingri, Planetary Chronicles I & II, Midsummer Century and Ixlandia.

Theology by Todd Rundgren
This musical legend ironically became involved with Miramar in 1993 because of his work with video and computer animation. A Wizard, A True Star, the title of an early Todd Rundgren solo album, aptly sums up the contributions of this multi-faceted artist to state-of-the-art music. As a songwriter, recording artist, score composer, video pioneer, producer, computer software developer, conceptualist, and most recently, interactive artist, Rundgren has made a lasting impact on both the form and content of popular music.

Theology, available here for the first time on CD, is representative of Rundgren's gifts as an instrumentalist and score composer. Most recognize Rundgren's trademark vocals on pop hits such as Hello It's Me and Can We Still Be Friends but don't realize that he has also scored tunes for television (Peewee Herman, Crime Stories) and films such as the mega-hit Dumb and Dumber. In fact, Theology was originally written to accompany one of his computer animation productions featured on Miramar's video release Computer Animation Festival, Volume 2.0. In all, Rundgren has been spotlighted on three Miramar home video releases including the aforementioned Festival 2.0, Computer Animation Festival, Volume 1.0 and the 1994 release of Rundgren's GrokGazer.

Rundgren explains the concept behind Theology:

"Essentially the conept is about the tendency for religious expression to spring up in the mind of man . . . Eventually it becomes the focus of their inspirations and spiritual expressions . . . It's simply the idea of this mystical tendency in human beings and society to seek a divine participation and what that inspires without getting into philosophical issues."

Note: Since this song was mastered from an analog video tape, the only known master, some audio glitches are present.
