Adventures Beyond Greenhaven ELFLORD is the product of Barry Blair's creative imagination. Drawing since childhood, Barry created ELFLORD as a teenager and recounted the adventures of Hawk Erickson and Windblade Greensleeve in simple art pads with pen and ink. These books were never reproduced and hence only one copy of each story exists under Barry's possession. These books were circulated among friends of his and subsequently returned to him. After several years and prompted by family and friends, Barry decided to mass produce his ELFLORD series. In 1980, the first ELFLORD rolled off the presses. Only a limited number were printed in black and white on card-stock paper. They were magazine sized (8½" x 11"). The following five issues were also similar in format. Issue #7 and #8 were the same size as previous issues, however, they were ring-bound. By the ninth issue, ELFLORD was reduced to a smaller size than that of a comic book (7" x 8½"). The interior art was still black and white, but the book sported a glossy colour cover each issue. This series was distributed exclusively in the Ottawa area. ELFLORD was cancelled after fifteen issues and a new series was created. It was labeled Volume 2, Issue #1 and it had a black and yellow cover. This second series was cancelled after the first issue. Between each issue, there were varying time intervals largely due to the fact that Barry produced these comics as a hobby during his spare time.
Wishing to get away from the fantasy aspect of comic books, ELFLORD was abandoned. Barry then went on to do four issues of SAMURAI before meeting Ken Campbell, who decided to finance a full-scale comic book in 1985. Barry combined his personal comic book company, Nightwynd Productions, with Ken's Aircel Insulation to form Aircel Publishing Ltd. With the success of SAMURAI, Barry revived ELFLORD once again, making minor changes in the names and costumes of the main characters. Sales on ELFLORD soared. It was an overnight sensations. Taking it one step further, Barry decided to make ELFLORD the first Aircel title to go colour. Ending the black and white series at issue #6, ELFLORD went full colour beginning with Volume 2, Issue #1. This colour ELFLORD is the current ongoing series. Adventures beyond Greenhaven -- the Official ELFLORD Fan Club was organized after the success of this colour title.
